Back in 2017 Londoners Felix, Eddy and Charlie were sitting in the pub wondering what to drink if they wanted to hang out without alcohol. Faced with a pitiful selection of alcohol-free options, the decided to make their own.

Free Star Prime Time is made with malted barley, hops and water; but no yeast, so it has no alcohol. Instead, its creators have added a range of other natural ingredients to build up the complexity of the flavour.

It was a World Beer Awards winner in 2019. Sadly, we weren’t quite so impressed. It’s a nice enough drink: we detected hint of lemon and also one or two other herbs we couldn’t quite identify, as well as big hoppy flavours. The problem was, for us, that it doesn’t really taste much like beer. It might be better to think about it as an interesting soft drink.

As always, you’ll have to try for yourself! We picked some up in Sainsbury’s.
