Luke Boase set up the Lucky Saint brewery with mission to “change how the world thinks about alcohol-free beer”. He headed off to Germany, where he spent months learning about beer and creating this new unfiltered lager, which he launched in 2018.

Since then, it’s gone from strength to strength and can be found in venues as diverse as Everyman cinemas and Honest burger restaurants. It’s not hard to see why: it is an excellent beer. It’s light and refreshing, and free of all of the failings of so many alcohol-free beers. Although it is officially a lager – which means it’s been matured in the cold – we’d say that the flavour is half-way between a weißbier and a sour. As such, despite the “lager” name, it’s perhaps more likely to please real-ale lovers than mainstream lager fans.

It’s a great-looking beer, served in stubby American-style bottles, with a beautiful blue and brass colour palette and a cute little ladybird. The beer is also guaranteed vegan, which is sure to please a lot of people. Top marks, we say!
