Like a lot of alcohol-free beers, Unltd Lager has a great personal story behind it.

Brewery founder Johnny Johnson was a hard-working lad who realised that, as he got a bit older, the hard drinking that went with his job might not be doing him too much good. He decided to take a break from alcohol. And, like a lot of people, he had trouble finding alcohol-free drinks that hit the spot. So he created his own. We first tried it in 2020, but it was revamped in 2021, so we’re re-reviewing it (if that’s a word!).

The first thing to say is that it looks great. Johnny has said he didn’t want it to look like an alcohol-free beer – “covered in big 0%s”. The result is a beautiful bottle, in striking matt black and silver. The beer inside is not bad either. It’s a bitter craft lager rather than a mainstream commercial lager. It’s light and hoppy with a bitter bite, and sure to quench your thirst. It does lack a bit of body, but you can’t have everything!
