We don’t know much about Braxzz, except that they’re Dutch and based on the beautiful Keizersgracht canal in central Amsterdam. They burst onto the scene in April 2018, with three new beers, including this non-alcoholic porter.

They’ve said that many “non-alcoholic beers on the market today are a huge compromise on taste” and that the “non-alcoholic category lacks variety for its consumers”. All true. They’ve also said that there’s a need for “true mouthfeel innovations to compensate the lack of alcohol”. Also spot on.

One of the major weaknesses of many alcohol-free and low-alcohol beers is that they taste good but feel like water. It’s simple chemistry, really: C2H6O (alcohol) makes H20 feel different. So, you need something else to takes its place, or you’ve just got a glass of malty-tasting water.

This porter is certainly not just malty-tasting water. In fact, it’s close to perfect. The brewers have such confidence in it that they took it to the Great British Beer Festival, which has to be a tough crowd! It’s got rich notes of coffee and chocolate, and under all that a proper porter bitterness. If you’re one of the many drinkers contributing to the current popularity of stout and porter, you really need to try this one!
