A review of Small Beer Dark Lager - a nice stout aroma and a sharp, bitter flavour with hints of coffee and chocolate; small beer maybe, but big on taste!

Founded in 2016, the Small Beer Company is following in a tradition that goes back to the days when water wasn’t safe to drink. Up until the 1800s, it was common for households, workplaces, and even schools, to brew very low-alcohol beers for drinking during the day. The Small Beer Co. thought it was time for a revival.

Amongst their offerings is this dark lager. We’re used to lager as a light, golden drink. This is deep red and a little bit bitter. But it’s no new-fangled fad, the roots of dark lager go way back to the Medieval German Schwarzbier. This particular dark lager comes from Bermondsey rather than Bavaria, but maybe they should put it on the list for the next Oktoberfest. It’s got a nice stout aroma and a sharp, bitter flavour with hints of coffee and chocolate, and a nice thick feel. Small beer maybe, but big on taste!
