According to legend, Old Speckled Hen was named after an MG car that had acquired a somewhat mottled appearance after several years parked under the paint shop at the MG factory near the Morland brewery in Oxfordshire.
Old Speckled Hen is normally around 5% ABV. This low-alcohol version is a tenth of that, and less than half the calories too. In terms of colour and flavour, it captures well the feel of the standard-strength beer, with that lovely copper hue and those caramel and toffee notes fans have come to expect. Our taste-testers did find a little bit too sweet (which is why we only gave it 3 out of 5). But overall, it’s not a bad beer at all.
