We weren’t sure which category to put this kvass in, but we eventually settled on Traditional Ales. It certainly is traditional but it’s not exactly ale.

Although it’s not widely-known in the UK, kvass is a big deal in much of eastern Europe – this particular Ulmaņlaiku Kvass is from Latvia. Kvass is made from grain (or sometimes from bread) and sometimes flavoured with fruit too. Ulmaņlaiku Kvass is made with rye, barley and wheat. We also picked up a hint of cherries or plums. It’s got a lovely ruby colour. It’s a lot fizzier than most beers and quite a bit sweeter.

It’s on sale in some branches of Sainsbury’s with the low-alcohol beers or in the Eastern European foods section.
