Of all the low-alcohol drinks on the market, “alcohol-free spirits” have to be the most unlikely. But when the big distillers start getting in on the game, you know that this is more than just a fad.

Atopia is produced by William Grant and Sons, the people behind some of Scotland’s most popular whiskies, and global players in the drinks business. It’s a great-looking drink that really stands out on the shelves in its old-style bottle with a massive wooden stopper and an intriguing image of fruits and spices that’s visible by looking through the drink.

Unlike most of the alcohol-free spirits on sale, this one is actually quite nice neat, although it’s meant to be served with tonic. It smells a little like Cointreau and has a nice mix of sweetness and citrus sharpness. It has quite a warm feel to it – one of our taste-testers even said “Christmassy”.

Of all the drinks in this category, this one seems likely to have the broadest appeal, although the premium price – £24 when we bought it – may put some people off.
