Supporting HR and Wellbeing teams to develop an alcohol policy

No workplace can successfully tackle workplace wellbeing without tackling alcohol.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists estimates that in June, more than 8.4m people in England were drinking at higher-risk levels, up from 4.8m in February 2020

We can support your HR and wellbeing teams to develop an alcohol policy to maximise its impact for your organisation.

The prize for those workplaces who get this right is huge. A workplace that is free from serious alcohol-harm will see:

  • A reduction in the risk of safeguarding incidents such as sexual harassment
  • Real, measurable improvements in wellbeing – physical, mental and financial
  • Genuine inclusion of the non-drinking workforce
  • Significant enhancements in productivity

77%

Almost eight in 10 employers (77%) interviewed identified alcohol as a major threat to employee wellbeing and a factor encouraging sickness absence.

30%

Over 30% of UK adults try to cope with workplace stress by consuming alcohol but currently only 6% of those intend to cut back.

The ability to engage the workforce in new ways and crucially a workplace that is free from serious alcohol harm does not have to be free from alcohol.

Our approach

One of our experienced associates will spend time understanding the impact alcohol has on your organisation. We will find out what you want to achieve, conduct a policy review and compare it to best practice. Using this data, we will generate a report for your organisation outlining recommendations to reduce the impact of alcohol on your workplace.

Building on this, we will help you to develop and implement a policy that fits your setting and can provide an annual review to ensure your policy continues to be effective over time.

We can also, if required, run a simple but effective internal consultation, depending on whether that fits with your internal culture. Our experience is that having an independent agency doing this can make it much easier to sell-in the policy once it’s finalised.

Our audits can be as short as a half day review of policies, through to a more thorough review incorporating staff surveys, interviews with key stakeholders, observation and focus groups.

Cultural audit

We can cover stress and alcohol, alcohol and mental health, alcohol and celebration, alcohol and home-working, and other key themes.

The scope of this flexible: it can take place in one part of the business or be more extensive. It can also be undertaken as a distinct exercise or smartly embedded into other organisational surveys. It can also be problem-focused, or problem-and-solutions focused.

Outputs

  • A full report into alcohol cultures and harms in your workplace
  • A series of actionable recommendations for your organisation to consider (if the scope includes both problems-and-solutions).
