The Athletic Brewing Company was founded in 2017 in Stratford, Connecticut, by John Walker and Bill Shufelt. Their aim was to create “delicious, craft non-alcoholic beers for the modern beer drinker to enjoy”. In 2021, two of their beers were launched in the UK, including this one: Upside Dawn.

It comes nicely presented in a neat six-pack with some great art on the cans – in this case an image of a sunrise, hence the name “Upside Dawn”. It’s a cloudy beer, lively without being too fizzy, with just a hint of sweetness and some lovely citrus notes. The aftertaste is mostly bitter hops. If you’re a fan of light and bitter beers, this may be just the one for you.

It’s also very clearly labelled with everything that’s in it – a lesson that many other brewers would do well to learn.
