How can you support the Alcohol Charter?

Help reduce the harm caused by alcohol by writing to your MP about the Alcohol Charter.

MPs can show their support for the Alcohol Charter by signing this Early Day Motion.

Early Day Motions are one way that topics can be submitted for debate in the House of Commons. The UK Parliament website defines them as the following:

“They are used to put on record the views of individual MPs and to draw attention to specific campaigns. By attracting the signatures of other MPs, they can be used to demonstrate the level of parliamentary support for a particular cause.”

The Alcohol Charter Early Day Motion is:

“That this House is alarmed that alcohol treatment services have been severely cut while the affordability and availability of alcohol, and alcohol dependency, have increased dramatically; notes that liver disease is now the only major cause of death in the UK which is rising; further notes that in England alone there are an estimated 600,000 alcohol-dependent adults and 200,000 children who live with an alcohol-dependent adult; and calls on the Government to base its new Alcohol Strategy on the Drugs, Alcohol and Justice Cross-Party Group and APPG on Alcohol Harm's Alcohol Charter recommendations to reduce harmful drinking, tackle ubiquitous excessively cheap alcohol and provide adequate support for both dependent and non-dependent drinkers.”

Ask your MP to sign Early Day Motion (#1682) if they are able to do so, or to bring the Charter to the attention of the Home Office Minister in charge of the Alcohol Strategy, Victoria Atkins MP. You can find a a template for you to use below.

Dear [your MP’s full name],

I am writing to ask you to sign the Early Day Motion in support of the Alcohol Charter (#1682). If you are not able or prefer not to sign Early Day Motions, I ask you to write to the Home Office Minister in charge of the Alcohol Strategy, Victoria Atkins MP, to bring the Alcohol Charter to her attention.

Alcohol is harming the health of people across the UK. Every year there are more than a million alcohol-related hospital admissions in England. Liver disease deaths in the UK have increased by 400% since 1970.

This matters to me because [you could write something about your personal experience with alcohol here.]

The Alcohol Charter, endorsed by over 30 organisations across the drugs and alcohol sector and cross-party parliamentarians, sets out effective and workable policies to include in the Government’s promised Alcohol Strategy.

I ask you to show your support by signing Early Day Motion #1682, or to bring the Charter to the attention of Victoria Atkins MP.

Thank you for your time.

Yours sincerely,
