Invitation to tender for research on Alcohol Change UK's behaviour change campaigns

We are commissioning a research project on Exploring the barriers to engaging with Alcohol Change UK behaviour change campaigns - the deadline for submissions is 9am on Monday, 11 October 2021.


Dry January is Alcohol Change UK’s key behaviour change offer, aimed at helping adults who drink at or above increasing risk levels to try a month without alcohol with a view to taking control of their drinking for the longer term.

Whilst we know that Dry January is life-changing for thousands of people, we are determined to continue to improve our offer to ensure that as many people as possible can benefit from it, irrespective of their background or circumstances.

We are therefore commissioning a project that will help us to better understand the barriers people face to taking up our Dry January offer and, more broadly, trying to make positive changes to their drinking, and how such barriers might be overcome.

Approaching the research through a qualitative lens, the project should not merely comprise an examination of what people may or may not find appealing about our Dry January offer, but much deeper considerations about some of the things that may be preventing people from changing, or trying to change, their drinking behaviour.

For example, does the concept of taking on a ‘challenge’ of ‘going dry’ feel too ambitious or disempowering; might there be other ways of reducing consumption besides undertaking temporary periods of abstinence; and could other behaviour change interventions alongside or instead of Dry January help people make long-term changes to their drinking?

It is anticipated that the project findings will help us to understand how our Dry January and future behaviour change offers can reach and engage with a larger, and more diverse, audience.
