Understanding and addressing suicide amongst people experiencing alcohol problems

An online learning event hosted by Alcohol Change UK

10:00 to 12:50, Thursday 13 March 2025

Alcohol is often a factor in suicide, but what does that mean? Alcohol doesn’t cause suicide, but its roles in many situations that lead to suicide cannot be ignored.

At this online learning event, we’ll be looking in-depth at this complex interrelationship, and considering what we can all do to reduce harm and save lives.

The speakers will be:

  • Mike Ward of Alcohol Change UK, on understanding suicide in the most vulnerable alcohol-dependent people
  • Ceri Fowler from NHS Wales, on the role of substance use in recent recorded suicides in Wales
  • Mark Brooks OBE, on moving beyond talk of “toxic masculinity” and creating positive approaches to suicide prevention for men
  • Michelle Gavin, on experiences of suicide in Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Communities
  • Eva Bell from Suicide Prevention Consortium, discussing how to make support for alcohol issues and suicidal ideation more accessible
