Alcohol-free cocktails range from abysmal to inspirational. Get the right blend of fruits and spices, and you’ll find it hard to tell the difference between them and their alcoholic equivalents. Get it wrong, and you’ve got an expensive glass of squash.

This trio of mocktails from Asda don’t quite inspire, but all of them are fresh-tasting, refreshing and mercifully short on sugar.

The Piña Colada is a simple blend of pineapple juice and coconut milk. Nothing too complicated – just a nice, fresh, natural fruit drink. It’s the best of the three, we’d say. The Daiquiri manages to effectively capture that special sour-sweet flavour of strawberries, with just a dash of lime to keep the sweetness in check. And finally, the Mojito is an easy-drinking mix of lime and mint. It wasn’t our favourite; but served over crushed ice it’s not bad at all.

Interestingly, Asda place these three drinks in-store with the other fruit drinks, not with the alcoholic cocktails. The packaging looks quite child-friendly too, with its selection of cute tropical birds. When they were first launched in 2012, they had a much more adult look. That may lead some to worry that drinks like this could be a soft introduction for children to the world of cocktails. There’s a question here for individual parents and carers about whether they’d want to give these drinks to a child. For adult cocktail fans looking to cut back on the alcohol – or just looking for a nice summery drink – they’re ideal.
