I started the Dry January® challenge because I wanted to take a step back and redefine my relationship with alcohol. I wasn’t expecting any major changes because I wasn’t a heavy drinker, but in just one month, I discovered a lot about myself.
The first thing I realised was how much I used alcohol as a way to mark the end of my workday. After a long day, a glass of wine or a beer was my signal that work was over. Without that, I had to get creative, finding new ways to transition into my evening, such as going for a walk, making a fun alcohol-free drink, or playing music. It turns out I didn’t need alcohol to unwind; I just needed a ritual.
Another big realisation came from socialising. I used to think alcohol made gatherings more fun and relaxed, but this month showed me otherwise. I had great conversations, laughed just as much (if not more), and felt more present in my interactions. I wasn’t missing out. I was actually gaining more meaningful connections.
I also discovered how much I enjoy the taste of drinks themselves. I thought I’d feel deprived without wine, beer, or cocktails, but alcohol-free options were surprisingly satisfying. These alcohol-free options meant I could still enjoy the flavours I liked, just without the alcohol.
