Music has the uncanny ability to resonate deeply with our emotions, making it a therapeutic medium for many. Sobriety-themed songs often share personal stories of struggle and triumph and as such, can offer instant motivation when you need it most! I’ve rounded up three of my favourite songs about sobriety and the stories behind them but for a curated selection of songs about sobriety, check out the Sober Girl Society's Spotify playlist which includes tracks by artists like James Arthur, Kelly Clarkson, and P!nk!
Millie Gooch brings another of her mid-week instalments to help you explore the sober lifestyle to the max.
Sober by Lucy Spraggan
Originally released in 2021, Spraggan, who is known for her candid songwriting, used this track to reflect on her struggles with alcohol and the power of quitting drinking. The lyrics poignantly describe her realisation of the negative impact alcohol had on her life and her subsequent decision to embrace sobriety. Recently, Lucy has re-released the track with none other than Robbie Williams!
Starting Over by Macklemore
Starting Over is a track by Macklemore that chronicles his relapse after three years of sobriety and his subsequent return to recovery. In the song, Macklemore candidly shares the shame and guilt he felt after relapsing, as well as the support he received from his loved ones and fans. The song highlights the reality that sobriety is not always a straight path and that setbacks can happen – but with the right support, anything is possible.
Not afraid by Eminem
Not Afraid, released in 2010, is a powerful anthem about overcoming addiction and personal struggles. Featured on his album Recovery, the song marked a pivotal moment in Eminem's career and personal life with the lyrics depicting Eminem’s determination to stay sober and his commitment to change. The rapper acknowledges his past mistakes, while looking forward with newfound strength. A hopeful and (let’s be honest - catchy) tune!
