In some cases, medication may be prescribed by your GP or your local specialist alcohol treatment team to help reduce your drinking.
These are not ‘cures’ in themselves: they form part of a wider programme of activity including ‘psychosocial therapy’ such as counselling and group work.
Remember all medications also carry risks and potential side effects.
Medications may include:
- Acamprosate (brand name Campral)
- Chlordiazepoxide (brand name Librium)
- Disulfiram (brand name Antabuse)
- Nalmefene (brand name Selincro)
- Naltrexone
Further information about the different types of medication and how they are used can be found on the NHS website.
