Medications to support recovery

The types of medication available to help reduce your drinking.

In some cases, medication may be prescribed by your GP or your local specialist alcohol treatment team to help reduce your drinking.

These are not ‘cures’ in themselves: they form part of a wider programme of activity including ‘psychosocial therapy’ such as counselling and group work.

Remember all medications also carry risks and potential side effects.

Medications may include:

  • Acamprosate (brand name Campral)
  • Chlordiazepoxide (brand name Librium)
  • Disulfiram (brand name Antabuse)
  • Nalmefene (brand name Selincro)
  • Naltrexone

Further information about the different types of medication and how they are used can be found on the NHS website.
