If Peroni Nastro Azzuro taps into the high-fashion and glamour of la dolce vita, Birra Moretti is sold as a drink for the ordinary Italian.

Founded in 1859 in the far north of the country, when Italy was still fighting for its independence from Austria, the brand is encapsulated by the character Baffo (literally “moustache”) an honest-looking fellow in Alpine dress, supping his pint on the town square. This new Moretti Zero carries his avuncular image, as part of an overall bottle design suggests that this is a quality beer.

As for the beer inside the bottle, our taste testers were divided once again! For some it was a great Italian lager, taking them back to lakeside holidays in the sun. One or two others found it a bit thin and a bit sweet. To be honest, it is a little sweeter than standard-strength Moretti (on account of not all the sugar being turned into alcohol) but the sweetness isn’t overwhelming.

We give it a respectable 3½ out of 5. But, as always, you’ll have to judge for yourself.
