Sainte Etienne is one of those Aldi products that looks someone else’s brand, but just different enough to keep them on the right side of the copyright law. You might recall they even netted their very own Brewdog beer by making a beer that looked quite a lot like a Brewdog beer.

I’m not sure which beer Sainte Etienne is emulating, but I know the flavour well. You remember those French/Belgian beers you’d get back in the day – the ones you had to take a trip over the Channel to get? Supermarkets started stocking them a number of years ago, until they went out of fashion. Well, here they are again, recreated flawlessly, but without the alcohol.

Is this beer for you? If you like Continental light lagers that are uncomplicated and easy going, then you will probably like this one. It’s inoffensive, and seemingly knowingly middle of the road. It’s not trying to reinvent the wheel or offer obscure flavour notes. It’s trying to be an average lager and it does that brilliantly.
