We weren’t quite sure where to put this one, since it’s not exactly beer but it is from Guinness, although it’s not Irish.
As well as being ubiquitous in Ireland, Guinness are also big in Nigeria. Very big. They’ve sponsored the national football team, and describe themselves as an “iconic African company”.
Traditional Nigerian Guinness comes in at a hefty 7.5%. But for those of us who like something a little less intoxicating, in 1990 Guinness Nigeria launched Malta Guinness. As the name suggests, it also taps into the fondness for non-alcoholic malty drinks in Nigeria and amongst African-Caribbean people in Britain.
According to the manufacturers, it’s “full of life, full of nourishment” and will give you a “top of the world feeling”. It’s certainly pretty calorific. As for the taste, if you like malt, you’ll love it. It’s got a hint of Guinness stout about it. But, overall, it’s pretty sweet-tasting.
It is available in some supermarkets but it’s a bit hit-and-miss. We picked it up from our local specialist African grocer.
