Henry Lindeman planted his first vineyard in the Hunter Valley in 1834, in what is now one of Australia’s prime wine-growing regions. These days, Lindeman’s are one of Australia’s biggest wine producers and their wines are some of the most popular in the UK too.

Low-alcohol red wine is hard to do well but this one is very good indeed. It’s got a lovely deep red colour like a good Cabernet Sauvignon – cleverly reflected in the deep autumnal tones of the packaging – a strong Cabernet Sauvignon aroma, and a good wine-like taste. In short, it’s the best of the reds we’ve tried.

Of course, a 0.5% wine is never going to taste exactly like a 14% Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This wine may not win over the connoisseurs, but if you’re looking for a nice reliable red for a steak dinner or a summer picnic, it’s ideal.

You’ll find it on sale in Asda and Morrisons.
