The St Austell Brewery is a long-established independent Cornish producer – and by “long”, we mean 1851. They’re best known for their Tribute pale ale, but their Proper Job IPA is also a popular brew. So, we were intrigued to see a 0.5% version of it in 2024.
If we start with appearances, this is an excellently packaged drink, with a smart blue colour scheme that makes it look like a quality ale – which is exactly what it is. How does it taste? In short, this is a really good pale ale. It’s been carefully brewed to 0.5%, rather than being brewed to 4% or 5% and then di-alcoholised. It’s got a lovely golden colour, a nice aroma, and a clean flavour. It’s bitter but not too bitter. It’s probably best alcohol-free IPA we've ever had.
