New Road Safety Strategy: A gear change

January 2026 | 6 minutes

The Department for Transport has today (7 Jan 2026) published a new Road Safety Strategy. The Strategy lists a number of reforms and plans, including a consultation on lowering the legal drink driving limit in England and Wales, which would represent the first change to this policy since 1967. The government will also consult on new powers to suspend driving licences for those suspected of drink or drug driving offences.

Dr Richard Piper, CEO of Alcohol Change UK, said: “We’re impressed by the Government's ambition and the thoughtful, proactive approach to the Road Safety Strategy, which we hope will deliver the first change to the drink driving limit in more than 50 years.

"When backed by strong enforcement, clear public information and access to treatment and support, lowering the limit has the power to make our roads safer for everyone and save lives. The Government has clearly listened to both those with expertise and personal experience, and we look forward to working with it on the next steps to support the strategy’s implementation.

"When it comes to driving, even small amounts of alcohol impair our ability to control a vehicle. The safest, simplest option is to avoid alcohol altogether if there’s any chance we may be getting behind the wheel. And with an ever-growing range of alcohol-free alternatives to choose from across pubs, bars, restaurants and shops, it’s easier than ever to enjoy going out and getting home safely.”
