Commenting on the Spending Review, Dr Richard Piper, CEO at Alcohol Change UK, said:
“It is a huge relief to see funding boosts for the NHS and policing in today’s Spending Review, both of which are needed to clear up the mess of alcohol harm currently felt by individuals, communities and society. Alongside investment in housing, infrastructure and education, the opportunity to improve the daily life and prospects of millions of people is within our grasp, something that will also prevent so many turning to alcohol and experiencing avoidable alcohol harm.
“We also welcome the Chancellor’s continued shift from sickness to prevention and hospital to community-based approaches. While the Spending Review doesn't explicitly outline how alcohol factors into this mix, it is a central piece of the puzzle. Bold, national action to actively prevent alcohol harm will improve the nation's health, wellbeing and prosperity and create safer, thriving neighbourhoods.
“We need stronger protections from out-of-control industry advertising, an end to cheap alcohol at pocket money prices and a better licensing system that properly regulates online sales. We support the drive to put neighbourhoods at the heart of prevention, including via community help partnerships. The investment announced for local regeneration and community help must embed early identification and support related to alcohol use in our local areas and workplaces.
“This Government is making all the right noises, and our attention is now firmly on the upcoming 10 Year Health plan where we hope to see bold, joined-up action on alcohol harm.”
