Equality Act

The Equality Act is there to protect people against discrimination and to ensure that people in the workplace and wider society are treated fairly. The 10 protected characteristics included in the Act cover: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation. But it doesn’t protect people with alcohol dependence.

There are very few rules for what should appear on alcohol labels and the system is self-regulated by the industry. Even though the low-risk drinking guidelines were updated over five years ago, our research has found that more than 70% of labels still did not include the correct drinking guidelines, and more than half had no nutritional information.
