Captain Morgan rum was named after the seventeenth century Welsh pirate Sir Henry Morgan of Llanrumney – once a village in rural Monmouthshire, now a suburb of Cardiff. The rum itself is a bit younger than the village and the buccaneer, having been first bottled in 1944 by the Canadian distillers Seagram.
It’s long been seen as a boisterous party drink, and there were probably a few raised eyebrows when a 0.0% version of it was launched in 2023. We really enjoyed that one and were pleased when it was followed up in 2024 by this premixed cocktail – just in time for Christmas!
There are no standout flavours here, no big spicy bite, but it is a very nice warming cocktail and a good choice if you fancy a rum-n-coke without the alcohol. It’s a little like drinking a very good fruit cake, but with only two calories!
