Samuel Smith’s have been brewing beer in Yorkshire since 1758, in their unique square slate vats. And their beers have vegan since before most of us knew what a vegan was. With such a history of innovation, it’s perhaps not surprising that they’ve joined the low-ABV revolution.
What we have here is a pleasingly straightforward beer. Unlike many low-alcohol beers, it’s not trying too hard to be wacky and different. It’s just a good-quality dark ale with a beautiful colour and a nice malty flavour. In many ways, it’s quite similar to their famous Nut Brown Ale, but with about a tenth the amount of alcohol.
Like all Samuel Smith’s beer, it’s beautifully packaged, and the cheery bottle label is based on an advertising poster used by the brewery in the 1950s. You can find Sam’s Brown Ale it in their many pubs, or buy it direct from the brewery.
