Wolfgang Franz Otto Blass arrived in Australia from Germany in 1961, with very little money but with lots of ambition to make great wine. The company named after him has grown to be one of Australia’s biggest wineries, and its wines – with their distinctive eagle logo – can be found in shops up and down the UK.

Alongside a Sauvignon Blanc, this Shiraz is one of their first ventures into the low-ABV market. We spotted it in Sainsbury’s during Dry January 2023. It’s well presented in a smart bottle. It has a nice deep red colour when poured and a pleasant aroma. The blurb on the bottle promises “dark berry notes and subtle spice”. Sadly, our taste-testers didn’t pick up much of that. It certainly avoids the excessive sweetness that mars so many 0.5% wines, but it does that by being very sour.
