The role of cooking, eating and connection in reducing alcohol harm and promoting recovery

An Alcohol Change UK online learning event

Thursday 2 July 2026

10.00 to 12.35

Alcohol issues are rarely just about alcohol. Harmful alcohol use often goes hand-in-hand with social disconnection and disordered eating. People who are alcohol-dependent are often underfed, underweight and undernourished, and this can increase the harm that alcohol causes in their lives.

Supporting people with severe alcohol problems to eat well is one clear route to reducing alcohol harm. Cooking and eating with others boosts physical and mental health and helps build the friendships and community that are the foundations of recovery.

Join us on 2 July to find out why food and nutrition should be an integral part of drug and alcohol treatment, and what you can do to make that happen.

The speakers will be:

  • Bally Parekh, on why drug and alcohol workers need to know more about nutrition
  • Anna Preece, on understanding the interface of alcohol dependence and disordered eating, and co-producing interventions
  • Claire Thomas, talking about how Barod’s Tuesday Lunch Club boosts confidence, skills and connection
  • Chloe Casey, discussing how the Nourish the New You project uses cookery and creative arts to support recovery
  • Andrew Misell from Alcohol Change UK, with an invitation to join a national network to promote food and nutrition in drug and alcohol treatment
