Alcohol Change UK offers specialist expertise to support Safeguarding Adult Reviews where alcohol use, dependence or alcohol-related harm is central to the case.
Safeguarding Adult Reviews and alcohol-related learning
Alcohol is a significant factor in many Safeguarding Adult Reviews, particularly where self-neglect, fluctuating mental capacity, trauma, co-occurring mental ill-health and repeated service disengagement are present. Too often, however, alcohol is treated as background context rather than as a core driver of risk, decision-making and system response.
Our consultancy service
We can support Safeguarding Adults Boards and commissioning partners with:
- Authoring or contributing to Safeguarding Adult Reviews with a strong alcohol, safeguarding and systems lens.
- Strengthening analysis of self-neglect, capacity and risk tolerance, particularly in long-running or complex cases.
- Challenging narratives of ‘non-engagement’ or ‘lifestyle choice’, and refocusing learning on service response, thresholds and decision-making.
- Identifying recurring system failures, including exclusion from services, parallel working, and unmanaged risk escalation.
- Translating SAR learning into practical change, linking recommendations directly to commissioning, pathway redesign and workforce development.
- Aligning SAR learning with wider system improvement, including drug and alcohol death reviews, co-occurring conditions work, safeguarding training and the Blue Light Approach.
Our approach is grounded in extensive experience of alcohol-related safeguarding and serious incident learning. We focus on improvement, accountability and prevention - supporting systems to respond more effectively to people at highest risk, rather than apportioning blame after the event.
