Willy Chase may well be familiar to a lot of our readers. He’s the Herefordshire farmer who brought us Tyrells crisps and a range of gins and vodkas. Being from Herefordshire, which is so well-known for its apples, it perhaps makes sense that he’s branched out into the cider vinegar business. And the vinegars he’s offering come from the apples in his own organic orchard.

Altogether, this has to be one of the most remarkable drinks we’ve ever tasted. Unlike some vinegar-based drinks, there’s no fruit juice here: just cider vinegar, turmeric, honey and black pepper. As a result, it has a very savoury flavour. Its makers suggest mixing it with olive oil to make a salad dressing, we and could see that working well. As a drink, it may appeal to those who like salt more than sugar.

Like all of Willy’s Vinegars, it is said to be bursting with helpful probiotic bacteria, and it’s described on the bottle as “a powerful elixir that has been used for generations to ward off illness and promote good health”. In the interests of balance, we should say that the evidence on the health benefits of “live” vinegar is far from rock-solid.
