Michael Sargood

Michael is a sobriety blogger, community builder and public relations freelancer who battled with alcohol addiction for most of his adult life, finally quitting the booze in 2020.

"Alcohol addiction has been rife in my family. I lost both grandparents on my mother's side to alcohol and, later, alcohol addiction nearly took me too. That's why I'm proud to be an Ambassador and herald the message that it's okay to be a man and not drink."

Despite holding down a good job, Michael had been secretly drinking up to a bottle of vodka most nights of the week and more at the weekend. Eventually, he became alcohol-dependent, mentally unwell and landing himself in trouble with the police and courts.

After undergoing detox and through the SMART Recovery programme, he struggled to build a fulfilling social life that didn’t involve pubs and bars - places he no longer wished to visit while he was in early sobriety. So, he started hosting sober events in his hometown of Southend-on-Sea and promoting any alcohol-free events he could find in the UK on his Sober Socials website, which he created to help others find fun and local connection without alcohol.
