Sion Meirion’s Top 5 Tips for a Night Out Without Drinking

Sion Meirion | March 2025 | 7 minutes

Sion Meirion, host of the Sober Gay Podcast, brings us some great pointers for having plenty of fun on an alcohol-free night out. Sion is passionate about bringing more visibility to those in the LGBTQ+ space who don’t drink.

Going out and not having an alcoholic drink in your hand does NOT mean missing out. It means showing up authentically as yourself, being fresh for the morning run you planned the next day and knowing you are going to show up and actually do the things you say you are going to do. It’s also great because you get to have a good time, but you know when to call it a night. It allows you to be present, in the moment.

It's not easy the first few times you do it, but trust me when the music is right, the drinks are delicious and you are with the right people - how could you not have a good night?

Here are 5 tips to make sure you have a gorgeous night out

  1. Wear a cute outfit 👀 – Personally, I think when you look good you FEEL good too!
  2. Choose the right spot 🎶 – Venues with good vibes, music you like, and a great atmosphere.
  3. Go with someone you trust🕺 – Especially at the beginning of your alcohol-free period, if you find the idea of socialising sober daunting, you could try going with a friend you can trust. That wayyou know you are going to have a good time regardless of what’s in your glass.
  4. Give yourself an out ⏳ – Have a plan for when you want to leave. You often know when your social battery has died, and there’s no shame in a French exit in my world.
  5. Remember your why ❤️ – Whether it’s better sleep, mental clarity, or just breaking the routine, keeping your reason in mind makes it easier to stay on track.

Hope these help!
