Asda are one of the UK’s biggest supermarkets. So, when they put two alcohol-free spirits into their own-brand drinks range, you kind of know that this style of drink isn’t just some flash in the pan.
As part of their Extra Special selection, Asda are offering two ‘botanical drinks’, one described simply as Premium the other specifically as Rhubarb and Ginger, both presented in smart bottles with nice woodcut designs that are viewed through the drink. Neither of them tastes anything like a traditional gin. But if you’re one of the thousands of drinkers who’ve been pushing the boundaries of what makes ‘gin’, these two may be just what you’re looking for. The Premium drink has a lemony bite. The Rhubarb and Ginger is more fruity. They’re both quite sharp, almost spicy.
They’re on sale for around £10 less than some of the better-known alcohol-free spirits brands, and so could provide an affordable introduction to this type of drink.
