Dirwest – the Welsh word for “temperance” – is a new drinks company from the Vale of Glamorgan, and the name is a tongue-in-cheek reference to Wales’ chapel-going past, when frowning on other people’s drinking habits was a bit of a pastime for some. Dirwest, on the other hand, aim to make alcohol-free living synonymous with pleasure rather than po-faced piety.

The alcohol-free gin market is fairly crowded these days, and drinks need something a bit different about them if they’re going to stand out. This one has juniper and coriander, which are widely found in gins, but there are also hints of citrus and pepper, and that’s what makes the difference here – especially the pepper.

The packaging is pretty unique too – Dirwest comes in a white bottle with a very modern and colourful take on traditional Welsh costumes.
