Mother Root has to be one of the most unexpected alcohol-free drinks on the market. Company founder Bethan Higson drew on her ten and more years of working in the wine business to create this drink, which was inspired by her desire for “a glass of something delicious at the end of the day” without the alcohol.
It’s described as an apéritif but it’s got more to it than your average French apéritif or Italian aperitivo. The ingredients are organic apple cider vinegar, honey, ginger and chilli. It’s the ginger that comes through strongest, but it’s the vinegar that makes it stand out. Without the vinegar, you could mix Mother Root with soda water and consider it a very good ginger beer, but it’s the bite of the cider vinegar that makes it something different.
