As their name suggests, Lowlander is a Dutch brewery. Founded in Amsterdam in 2016, they’re relative newcomers, but they’ve wasted no time since then in establishing themselves in the market.

Brewing with a range of herbs and spices – including some more normally associated with spirits and liqueurs – they’re very much at the cutting edge of the craft beer revolution, with some pretty revolutionary beers, including this one!

Witbier is the Dutch name for what the Germans call weißbier – variously translated as white beer or wheat beer. Like most witbiers, this one is cloudy, but unlike most of them, it has a strong citrus taste. That’s because Lowlander have been working with PeelPioneers on a clever scheme to collect orange and lemon peel from bars and restaurants and cook it up into something new – in the case, beer.

This is a beer for beer-lovers who love to experiment. Appropriately, the label carries an image based on the experimental submarine build by the Dutchman Cornelius Drebbel and demonstrated to King James I and thousands of Londoners in the River Thames around 1620.

If you like your beer to taste like a traditional ale, this one may not be for you. If you’re into unexpected flavours, you should give it a go.
