A proudly Welsh product with all the characteristics of a really good German lager

This new beer from Vale of Glamorgan drinks producer Dirwest is one of three – along with a citrus lager and a pale ale.

The name is a homage to Cwm Tryweryn in Montgomeryshire, a community that was flooded in 1965 to create a reservoir to supply water to the city of Liverpool. The can design echoes the graffiti famously painted on a barn wall in Llanrhystud in the 1980s to record that event.

The beer itself very pale, and very light, but that shouldn’t lead you to think there’s not much to it. It feels a bit odd to say it about such a proudly Welsh product, but this has all the characteristics of a really good German lager, including that bitter bite lacking from so many big-brand lagers. If you’re in search of authenticity in the lager category, this is a good place to start.
