Hop Bucha is the curious lovechild of Equinox, artisan kombucha brewers, and T&R Theakston, the Yorkshire beer brewers who have been around since 1827.
And what a citrusy little number they’ve created! Pale yellow, seriously fizzy, and bursting with lemon and grapefruit, it delivers a proper citrus punch from the first sip. Jester, Cascade and Summit hops then add a gently bitter, hoppy edge, balancing the sweetness and giving it the feel of a grown-up soft drink rather than a sugary pop.
The citrus is very much the star of the show. Lemon brings the zing, grapefruit brings the tang, while the hops add just enough bitterness to keep things interesting. Our reviewers liked it, with the combination of fizz, fruit and hops making for a refreshing and characterful drink.
It says on the can that the drink is “100% natural and gut-friendly”. It’s also vegan and gluten-free, so there’s plenty to like.
There is, however, a rather large lemon-shaped cloud on the horizon: a 330ml can contains over 10g of sugar. That equates to about half a glazed doughnut. So, although we enjoyed it, one can was enough for us.
Still, if you like your alcohol-free drinks with plenty of zest, Hop Bucha certainly doesn’t disappoint. It’s fruity, fizzy, hoppy and, above all, very citrusy. When life gives you lemons, apparently the answer is to add grapefruit and hops!
