Sierra Nevada, one of America’s top independent craft breweries, has been on a bit of a journey. Its founder, Ken Grossman, was said to have been so bowled over by the quality of alcohol-free beers when visiting Germany’s Oktoberfest back in 2018 that he went straight back to the States, determined to make a non-alcoholic brew he could be proud of.

After a few more years of research, and a lot of tinkering, comes Trail Pass Golden, a drink the brewery says has “miles of flavour”. Are they right? Well, if you like your beers to bowl you over with hops then you should go elsewhere. If, however, you prefer an easy-drinking, malty beverage, then this one fits the bill and feels like a real treat. Like a lot of alcohol-free beers, there’s not much of a head and it does taste on the sweet side but, overall, we were very impressed.
