The Marlborough district of New Zealand’s South Island first appeared on the international wine stage in the 1980s with a Sauvignon Blanc that stood out in the market, and it’s a drink that just keeps getting more popular. It’s no surprise, then, that high street retailer Marks & Spencer have teamed up with New Zealand winemakers Giesen to produce an alcohol-free version of the world’s favourite antipodean tipple.
It’s a drink that clearly emphasises its roots in Aotearoa – in both its name a bottle design. The drink inside has the look and aroma of a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Flavour-wise, it’s not going to compete with the best Marlborough white wines but it’s as good as many full-strength wines from that region. It’s light but not watery. The blurb on the bottle says it has notes of gooseberries; we thought more of green apples – but sharp and fresh, in any case. Certainly worth a try if you’re one of the millions around the world with a fondness for Southern Hemisphere Savvy B
