Evidence submission: Informing the mental health strategy for England

Substance use and mental health problems often co-exist, so people should be supported for both.

We have responded to the Department of Health and Social Care’s call for evidence on informing the mental health strategy for England.

In our response, we highlighted that:

  • Any mental health strategy needs to address substance use as it is such a widespread combination
  • People should not be denied access to mental health services on account of their substance use and vice versa
  • Alcohol Change UK’s “Blue Light” approach has successfully supported people with alcohol dependency and associated mental health problems with many positive outcomes for local authorities
  • Alcohol Change UK has built on the success and learnings of the Blue Light Approach and developed “The West Sussex Co-occurring Conditions Protocol”, which provides a model that can be useful elsewhere. Contact us for more information.
  • Important lessons can and should be learned from Safeguarding Adult Reviews (SARs)
