Written evidence: National Cancer Plan

Why preventing alcohol harm must play a major role in the National Cancer Plan.

Alcohol Change UK has provided a response to inform the development of the government’s national cancer plan for England.

In our response, we highlighted that:

  • Alcohol consumption is a major risk factor for cancer – even at lower levels of consumption.
  • Public awareness of the link is low, as we are not told the whole truth while the alcohol industry self-regulates labelling.
  • The Government should introduce mandatory health warning labels on alcoholic products to increase awareness of the link and enable people to make fully informed choices.
  • Awareness of alcohol as a cancer risk factor is associated with public support for alcohol policies.
  • The Government should also reduce the affordability, availability, and marketing of alcohol to make our environment less alcohol-centric and reduce people’s consumption.
